South Florida residents have to rack up high in water utility bills every month. Part of it can be attributed to the various exercised state administrative policies, but for most of it, it’s the water leaks that are to be held accountable.

According to United States Environmental Protection Agency, household leaks account for more than 1 trillion gallons of waste water annually nationwide.

That’s a lot of water!

Where having control over administrative policies is beyond our reach, exercising control to plug the leaks and ensure that we use water efficiently — and in turn cut down our water utility bills — is definitely something that is well within our capacity.

To help you out, we will be sharing few tips with you—tips proposed by your friendly neighborhood plumbers in Delray beach.

Let’s Start with Your Kitchen

How do you wash your dishes, plates, cups and bowls? Do you hand-wash them?

If you do, then we would suggest that you start using a dishwasher instead.

Why?

Because a dishwasher consumes less water in comparison to what it takes to hand-wash your dishes.

And what about the tap water? Do you simply wait for it to get chilled, flushing it down the sink, before filling your glass and drinking it, or do you prefer storing drinking water in fridge for later use?

You see, keeping the tap open for the water to get cold is not a good idea—it’s the wastage of resources.

While we are at it—in the kitchen—how about checking your faucets for any leak? Faucet washers and gaskets are susceptible to wear and tear. They tend to worn out which can cause your faucet to leak.

Do you know how much leaky faucets waste water every year?

More than 3000 gallons to be precise. If saved, you can utilize it for taking roughly about 180 showers.

Next, It’s Time to Pay a Visit To Your Bathroom!

Your toilet – let’s put it to test if it’s leaking.

Place a dye tablet in the toilet tank. Observe if the dye seeps its way into the toilet bowl.

Did you find the dye in the toilet bowl?

It’s confirmed, your toilet is leaking. You might have been wasting up to 500 gallons of water each day because of your leaky toilet.

What causes your toilet to leak?

There can be several possible reasons, the most common being a worn-out flapper. Good news is flappers are inexpensive and are easily available at a hardware store.

Ssshhh! — Where is that dripping sound coming from?

Ah your shower head hasn’t been closed properly. 10 drips per minute can waste 500 gallons of water per year.

Is it closed? Then your shower head is leaking. You can use a Teflon tape to fix it and if the leak still does not get fixed, you should call a licensed professional to get it checked.

Save water, save life and save money!
