Funky Smelling Drains And Water? Here Is What You Can Do Until Help Arrives

Some signs stand out to even the most clueless of us. Puddles and funky smells can be really good indicators of something going on with your plumbing.

The only concern is that by the time these signs start to show, the water leaks have begun to either cause damage or have increased from a minor leak to a bigger one.

You can easily detect these two signs and maybe do a monthly inspection in areas with appliances that use water. But what happens once you’ve found these?

Here is what you can do to minimize damage till help arrives:

Frozen Pipes

If you spot any breakage, or splits, immediately call your plumber because the damage will escalate quickly when it thaws.

If you need to thaw the pipe, never use an open flame; instead go at it with a blow dryer or turn up the heating in your home to allow some of it to melt without instant temperature changes.

Leaky Faucets

A slow leak is not always something to be concerned about, and you can tighten the valve at home using a wrench or simply call a plumber if that doesn’t work.

Leaky Toilet

A few pumps from a plunger can usually rectify a clogged situation. And if this doesn’t work then you can always call a plumber.

We advise against chemical drain openers because while they appear effective, they can cause some serious damage to your pipes. If you spot water puddles around your toilet, turn off the water valve and call a plumber.

Clogging

Slow drainage can become a severe problem if not treated quickly. You can employ the use of chemical drain openers that are meant for a specific drain.

If the water is coming back up from drains to your rooms, this can indicate a big sewage block in which case a chemical drain opener is not the best idea.

Here are some additional tips that can come in handy during a crisis:

  1. For smaller leaks, turn off the source of water such as the ones behind toilets and under the sinks.
  2. You can also locate the main valve and turn it off in case of bigger emergencies. A good rule of thumb is that the valve is off when the valve is perpendicular to the pipe.
  3. Always keep plumber tape handy for smaller leaks.
  4. Always turn off heaters first if it is a major plumbing emergency
  5. Places buckets and extra rags where you can
