Six Plumbing Myths Debunked!

Many old wives tales go around when it comes to plumbing. Here are some plumbing myths:

Myth #1: Placing a brick in the flush tank saves money.

Bricks aren’t meant to be part of your plumbing system. You are only setting yourself up for more repairs by placing a brick in the toilet tank. The chances of you breaking the flush flap are higher now because you’ll have to flush twice. You’re also wasting a lot of water! Bricks tend to crumble after some time, the debris in your toilet tank or toilet itself will only cause clogs.

Myth #2: Bleach toilet tablets keep the toilet fresh.

Bleach is a highly alkaline in nature. A heavy concentration of it will corrode the inner working of the toilet within six months. Using bleach to clean away any stains is alright, but letting it sit for a long time will eat away the surface.

Myth #3: Water heaters tend to explode when then gurgle.

It’s good to be vigilant about your water heater. With that being said, the gurgling of the water heater isn’t uncommon. Old gas water heaters tend to be a bit noisy. Sediment and debris tend to build up over the years. This sediment then hardens over time and can break away and make loud noises. When this happens, it’s best to call a plumber to flush the water heater. As part of water heater maintenance, it should be drained annually.

Myth #4: Lemon peels make the sink smell fresh.

Lemon and other citrus fruits can help freshen up any area. This myth holds some truth if you have a powerful garbage disposal unit. Those who are unsure if their system can process lemon peels can use a solution of vinegar and baking soda. This fizzy mixture can keep drains fresh and eliminate odors.

Myth #5: Baby wipes can be flushed down the toilet.

Toilets are only built to deal with human waste and tissues. All other items need to be discarded in trashcans. Baby wipes aren’t designed to break down in the water like tissues, making them unfit to be flushed away. It can cause major clogging of the system and cause backups.

Myth #6: A slowly leaking faucet isn’t a concern

All leaks start small. Any dripping water around your home is a cause for concern. Your water bills will increase and you’re wasting more water than anticipated. Water faucets can leak due to a loose connection or a crack along the way. If you are unable to fix it, call up a reliable plumbing service.
